Environment and Conservation

The setting of Malembuane is one of the most biodiverse marine environments in Mozambique. Its coastal waters are home to sea turtle nesting grounds, coral reefs teeming with tropical fish, and whale shark and manta ray visits throughout the year. The mangrove ecosystems in the area likely provide rich birdlife and essential coastal protection.

The Weather

All year long, Malembuane offers a remarkable variety of marine life and warm, inviting waters. Seasonal variations in the water temperature result in different experiences. Sea temperatures range from 27.30C to 29.40C during the summer (November to April), making them ideal for swimming and other water sports. In the fall (May to June), temperatures hover between 24.90°C and 280°C, which is still warm enough for swimming. Water temperatures drop from 220°C to 25.80°C during the winter months of July through August. The waters return to between 230°C and 26.80°C by spring (September to October), which makes it perfect for diving and snorkeling.

The remarkable variety of marine life found in Malembuane's waters draws divers and nature enthusiasts from all over the world. Though they can also be seen in small numbers from June to September, whale sharks, the gentle giants of the ocean, are most frequently seen between late October and late March when the plankton blooms attract them. From July to October, humpback whales travel through the region, with the best times to see them being in July and September. From November to April, sea turtles select these beaches for their nesting grounds, making this time of year unique for seeing hatchlings make their way to the ocean.

The coral reefs off the coast of Malembuanes are a thriving underwater environment that provide amazing diving and snorkeling opportunities. The dry season, which runs from May to October, is the best time to see the coral reefs because the sea is calm and clear, making it the perfect time to explore the rich marine biodiversity.
