Coral Reefs
The most vibrant and diverse reef systems in the Western Indian Ocean are the coral reefs, particularly those surrounding the Bazaruto archipelago. These reefs are essential to marine biodiversity, tourism, and human life. In addition to being a popular destination for snorkelers and scuba divers, these coral reefs also help prevent erosion along the coastline, sustain local fisheries and food security, and serve as nurseries for fish and other marine life.
Where are the reefs located?
They are located off the coast of Vilankulo, in the vicinity of the Bazaruto Archipelago.
Two-mile reef (between Bazaruto and Benguerra)
Five-mile reef (between Santa Carolina and Magaruque Island).
These reefs, which are accessible by boat from Vilankulo, are great locations for snorkeling and scuba diving.
Conservation Efforts
Local organizations, such as ParCo Community Partners, are actively involved in marine conservation. Their initiatives include establishing Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs), promoting sustainable fishing practices, and restoring mangrove habitats.
The Marine Megafauna Foundation monitors reef health and biodiversity.
Parque Nacional de Bazaruto enforces protection zones.
BRUV surveys (underwater cameras) assess fish population.
Eco-tourism operators follow reef-safe practices.

Climate change (warming seas causing coral bleaching)
Uncontrolled travel or anchoring
Destructive fishing gear and overfishing
Plastic pollution.
How to enjoy responsibly
